Water Filtration Cost Calculator: Compare True Ownership Costs
Compare two filtration setups using your own equipment prices, installation quotes, replacement schedules and operating expenses—over one to ten years.
Compare the complete bill
The cheapest purchase price may not mean the lowest cost to own
Compare the total over the same time period: equipment + installation + scheduled replacements + annual operating expenses. This calculator accepts your own costs for two options and shows an itemized total, annualized cost and difference. It does not decide whether either option makes your water safe. First match each candidate to your test results, desired treatment location and documented reduction claims. CDC guidance · EPA WaterSense guide.
Compare two systems over 1–10 years
The starting values are illustrative arithmetic examples, not observed prices. Replace every field with your actual equipment quote, replacement-part prices and required maintenance intervals. All calculations happen in your browser; nothing is submitted.
Option A · Example under-sink setup
Example values only. Replace every input with a real quote or documented zero.
Replacement component 1
Replacement component 2
Option B · Example higher-upfront setup
Example values only. Replace every input with a real quote or documented zero.
Replacement component 1
Replacement component 2
Zero is allowed for a genuinely absent cost. A blank, negative, nonfinite, or incompatible replacement interval blocks the calculation. Component prices must be paired with a positive interval.
Exactly how the calculator works
Total = equipment + installation + (annual other costs × years) + replacement events × price for each component.
Replacement events = ceiling((years × 12) ÷ interval in months) − 1, never below zero. This counts scheduled replacements after installation but before the end of the chosen period. The original cartridges are assumed included in the equipment price. A cartridge due exactly on the period’s final day is excluded; include it if you intend to keep using the system beyond that day.
Annualized cost = total ÷ years. Difference = absolute difference between the two totals. This is a cash-budget comparison, not a discounted net-present-value analysis.
Worked example: five years
Option A: $220 equipment + $80 installation + $30 × 5 other expenses + $45 × 9 replacement events (every six months, initial cartridge included) = $855. Option B: $600 + $150 + $20 × 5 + $75 × 4 annual replacements = $1,150. Option A costs $295 less under these invented budgeting inputs only. They do not establish real product costs or performance.
A gallon-rated cartridge can reach its capacity before its time limit. This calculator uses the time interval you enter, so you must shorten that interval if your projected gallons would exhaust the cartridge earlier. It does not predict cartridge life from water chemistry, sediment load or flow. Use the earlier manufacturer limit. NSF replacement guidance.
Which costs belong in your estimate?
| Expense | Include | Common omission |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront purchase | Unit, housing, fittings, first set of cartridges | Shipping, taxes, accessories |
| Installation | Plumbing, drain or electrical work, initial water test | Permit, pre-treatment, disposal |
| Replacements | Sediment/carbon cartridges, RO membranes, UV lamps, media | Different intervals for each component |
| Other annual costs | Power, wastewater, salt/chemicals, service, lab retesting | Uncertain costs entered as zero |
| Risk and variability | Keep a separate contingency allowance | Repairs, inflation, premature fouling |

Use this four-check decision rule before comparing totals
Does it treat the actual contaminant?
Review your city utility report or well-water laboratory results. Do not choose the lower-cost option if its exact contaminant claim is missing.
Does it cover the right water?
Kitchen-only drinking water and whole-home treatment solve different problems. Price only options meeting your intended scope.
Are parts and service realistic?
Use the exact replacement part number, interval and local installation estimate; check genuine cartridge compatibility.
Explore replacement costs before buying
These are shopping searches, not ranked or independently certified product endorsements. Confirm exact compatibility, treatment claims, warranty and replacement schedules before ordering.
Under-sink filter cartridges
Compare the genuine replacement cartridge and its specified service interval for the system you own.
Compare replacement optionsRO filter and membrane kits
Check whether a kit includes the membrane, all prefilters and postfilter, and the correct model numbers.
Explore maintenance kitsSediment cartridges
Match housing dimensions, micron rating, material and documented service limits.
Browse compatible cartridgesFive errors that distort a filtration budget
- Using sticker price alone. Add all scheduled replacements and operating costs.
- Assuming every cartridge lasts 12 months. Use the exact model’s instructions; capacity or fouling can shorten life.
- Counting initial cartridges twice. This calculator assumes they are included in the equipment price.
- Comparing unequal treatment. Compare only systems that address the same tested problem and water volume.
- Calling a hypothetical saving a guarantee. Prices, water chemistry, usage and maintenance vary.
Water filter cost calculator FAQs
What is included in the five-year cost?
Equipment, installation, scheduled replacements strictly before the five-year endpoint, and five years of other annual expenses entered by you.
Why does the calculator exclude a cartridge due on the final day?
Its defined budget ends at that moment. If you will keep using the system after the period, add the next replacement to your budget.
What if a cartridge has both a gallon and month limit?
Estimate when either limit will be reached and enter the earlier interval. The tool does not infer household usage or chemical breakthrough.
Does the calculator estimate water filter prices?
No. It starts with clearly labeled hypothetical values that you replace with actual quotes and current replacement-part prices.
How do I account for RO wastewater?
Use the exact model’s documented water-efficiency information and your local water/sewer rate to calculate an annual expense, then include it under other recurring costs.
Should I include professional installation?
Yes if required for your specific setup. Use a local written quote, not an unsupported national average.
What if a replacement part is not used?
Enter zero for both its cost and interval. Do not enter a positive price with a zero-month interval.
Is the lower-cost option automatically better?
No. It must first address the tested contaminant, flow and treatment location and meet applicable exact-model claims.
Can I compare well-water and city-water treatment?
You can budget either, but only compare alternatives designed for your actual water quality and required treatment scope.
Does this include inflation or future repairs?
Only if you explicitly include an allowance in your inputs. The tool does not forecast price changes or equipment failures.
